Some say the story has been passed down from generation to generation but local residents and the historical society say it started around the 1970's. I love a good haunting story so of course I decided to visit. Before I tell you how my visit to Vale End went let me tell you a little bit more about "the blue lady".

The woman now known as the blue lady was a local Wilton NH resident named, Mary Ritter Spalding. Mary was the first wife of Captain Isaac Spalding. For reasons unknown she is buried with her husbands second wife, also named Mary. Now I don't know about you but that alone would make me haunt the place if I had to be buried with my husbands replacement.

The stone reads:
Mary Ritter
his wife
Born 12 Jan. 1773
Died 27 April 1808
Aged 35
Her serenity of temper and gentleness of manors threw a charm over a short and peaceful life
Married April 1795
Erected by their children in recognition of their moral virtues and in gratitude for their parental worth
1831
Mary;
2 wife of
Isaac Spalding
Died Feb. 24 1855
Aged 75
The hauntings of this cemetery have all be reported around this grave. People claim to have seen orbs, a blue lady in old fashioned clothing and a column of blue light appears a foot or two above this headstone. The column of light vibrates with energy and hovering 6 feet into the air with no apparent reason. People have tried to dispute the light when they've seen it but found nothing that could have caused it.
There have even been reports of things more sinister than these sightings as well. In 1999, a local paranormal investigator and her best friend/photographer claimed to have seem evil dark entities. Sadly just 5 days after seeing something the best friend/photographer was found dead in her car of an apparent heart attack although she is reported to have been a healthy woman with no issues prior. In the article https://hollowhill.com/possible-demons-at-vale-end-cemetery/ the paranormal investigator says "She was terrified, and asked if anything follows people home from cemeteries. I assured her that no, nothing follows you home. If ghosts could leave where they were, they probably wouldn’t be haunting." I can't for the life of me understand why she said that. There have been so many videos, articles, blogs, books etc. about spirits, entities whatever attaching themselves to someone or even to objects and going with them out of where ever they were. Whatever the case may be about the friend and the sightings these ladies saw, I believe them. Who are we to say what someone else's experience was. I do feel bad no matter what, a woman lost her best friend and people try to discredit their experiences.
Please take a moment to think of others when you visit a place like this. One - DO NOT cause any damage to a property or grave EVER. Not only is this extremely disrespectful to the owner or caretaker it is disrespectful to the person(s) buried there. Would you want someone to do this to you after you're gone? Two - If you read a story about someone's experience and sightings while at a supposedly haunted place, do not sit there and try to discredit them and call them a liar. Were you there? Did you see what they saw? No, then stop the hate! Every person will have a different experience, so try to keep that in mind. Three - DO NOT take anything from a grave or location!! This is not a gift shop. Taking things from a grave to keep a momento or sell online is just insane to me. This is absolutely not ok ever. Stop being a jerk.
Moving on, if you're not a waste of human existence please ignore the previous paragraph. Sadly, things like that need to be sad because some people just don't care. Now I told you earlier on in this post that I would tell you about my experience at Vale End while visiting the supposed grave of the "Blue Lady." First off, there is no place to park. When you drive up the hill on the single car width road lined with graves you get to the top and it has a tiny loop around a few graves connecting back to the same way you came up. This is all fine and dandy if you have a little car, I however drive a beast of a vehicle; an old police Tahoe. I always worry I'm going to drive over or clip a gravesite. So, I had to park on the road and go exploring. Sadly on my hunt for the grave of Mary Ritter I did trip over a grave. There are tons of roots coming up and some graves are getting hidden by them. A grave of an Ezra ( that's all I could read) was hidden by roots and looked so small. I'll share a picture below.

I remembered from the pictures in other articles that Mary's grave had an odd shape so I pulled up a picture for reference and realized it wasn't far from where I was. When I got to her grave I noticed she had some offerings of coins, vodka, Chapstick, a Butterfinger candy bar, a bracelet, stuffed dog and a wreath. The sad part was the grave does have an odd shape but not by choice. Either the headstone broke or people broke it making the top have that weird point on it.

I know your waiting for the biggest part, did I see or feel anything? Yes and no. What I felt was a lot of peace and calmness there. It was very quiet. My husband laughed when I told him it is a place I would hang out and read a book because it was so calm. The only thing I saw was a really old cemetery. Does that mean there isn't a spirit haunting the place? no it just means I didn't see anything. When leaving I was stopped by a couple of town workers wanting to know why I was there. Due to a lot of vandals and people hanging around the area is closely monitored by police and other city employees. If planning a visit do it during daylight hours and don't cause any problems. Remember this is a final resting place of many people, please respect that.
