In the Monadnock Region we have seven (I believe) covered bridges and all of which are still in use today. The Denman Thompson however is the only one in the area that is decorated every year with lights for Christmas.

Christmas Eve 2021

This gorgeous covered bridge is 137 feet long and about 64 feet wide and includes a walking path on one side.
It was built by Zadoc Taft in 1832 and named after a West Swanzey resident named Denman Thompson (1833-1911). Mr. Thompson was a playwright and theater actor who wrote the play The Old Homestead, that he gained national recognition for playing the character Joshua Whitcomb.
This covered bridge is a two-span town lattice truss bridge with a stone central pier and abutments. In 1832, this bridge only cost $523.27 to build. Today that doesn't seem like a lot but during that time it definitely was.
The Denman Thompson is New Hampshire's covered bridge #5 and the world guide number 29-03-04.

Next to the bridge is a small park area with a gazebo, benches, grill and wide open area for your family to play pass or something. There is even an area to get access to the water but is a bit steep and not meant for little ones or short people like myself.

Well I hope you enjoy a little bit of history here. Let me know what you think below. Do you like covered and the history behind them as much as I do? Where should we go next?
